The Capture of Ningpo: bombardment of Point Battery and East Gate, 1862. 'Kestrel, Etoile, Hardy, Point Battery, East Gate...capture of Ningpo, in May last, by a combined force of French and English...the Point Battery opened fire on the Kestrel, and Etoile French gun-boat, and almost immediately afterwards a volley of musketry was fired from the parapets of Salt Gate at the Encounter. A broadside of shell was immediately poured in, which entirely destroyed the parapet and choked with ruins the guns in position there...The Kestrel suffered severely during the bombardment, several roundshot hulling her, and she had two men severely wounded'.
