The Capture of Ningpo: bombardment of the North and East Gates, 1862. 'Salt Gate, Dr. Parker's House, H.M.S. Encounter, North Gate, H.M.S. Ringdove...the Point Battery opened fire on the Kestrel, and Etoile French gun-boat, and almost immediately afterwards a volley of musketry was fired from the parapets of Salt Gate at the Encounter. A broadside of shell was immediately poured in, which entirely destroyed the parapet and choked with ruins the guns in position there; the Ringdove shortly after opened fire on the north gate...The guns which opened on the Encounter were speedily silenced, Lieutenant Cornewall making some beautiful shots, but the enemy kept up a fire of gingalls with much spirit. The Hardy, Kestrel, and French vessels Etoile and Confucius had a warm berth off the Point Battery, which was never completely silenced......At two the Hardy towed the boats containing the landing party up the river to Dr. Parker's house, where they landed, and a party of marines...were installed in the lookout on its roof, which commanded a good view of the walls'.
