Dr. Staley, Bishop of Honolulu, 1862. Engraving from a photograph by Mayer Brothers. 'The Right Rev. T. N. Staley, D.D., formerly Fellow of Queen's College, Cambridge, was...appointed by his Grace the Archbishop of Canterbury, and consecrated on Sunday, the 15th of December, 1861, together with the Bishop of Gloucester and Bristol, the Bishops of London and Oxford acting as assessors. Since then the Bishop has been engaged in obtaining funds to assist him in establishing the Church in his now diocese, and on Monday next, the 18th of August, he will embark at Southampton with two clergymen (one having already preceded him), in the Tasmania, for Honolulu, via Panama. We may mention that one of the first acts he will have to perform after his arrival will be the baptism of the Prince of Hawaii, a child three years of age, who is the next heir to the crown. Our Queen has graciously consented to act, by proxy, as the sponsor'. Thomas Nettleship Staley was the first Anglican bishop of the Church of Hawaii. From "Illustrated London News", 1862.
