New railway-bridge over the Rhine, near Mayence, 1862. The bridge was '...constructed according to the comparatively new system called "Pauli's system", vulgo "Fish-shaped girder system" which seem to be extremely well adapted for large spans, as regards economy and rigidity of structure...The new bridge is built by the Hessische Ludwigs-Bahn Company, and the engineers and contractors for the iron structure...are Messrs. Klet and Co, of Nürnberg. It will form part of the great route from the Rhine to Vienna. The traffic at this point of the line is now effected by steamers, which carry the laden waggons across the Rhine, at a considerable cost'. From "Illustrated London News", 1862.
