View in Darmstadt [in Germany] - from a sketch by our special artist, 1862. 'Palace of Prince and Princess Louis of Hesse; Palace of Prince Charles (Father of Prince Louis). In consequence of the marriage of Princess Alice with Prince Louis of Hesse, and of the fact of the illustrious couple making Darmstadt their occasional abode, this quiet little town has been invested with a new interest to English people. It is the capital of the Grand Duchy of Hesse-Darmstadt, and consists of an old and a new town, both inclosed by walls. The palace of Prince Louis and that of his father, Prince Charles, are two simple mans on in the best part of the town, near the Roman Catholic church...[Darmstadt's] principal manufactures are carpets, paper, silver articles, starch, tobacco, and was candles; and its population is about 30,000. Liebig, the celebrated chemist, was born here in 1803'. From "Illustrated London News", 1862.
