The British Association at Bath: Pulteney-bridge, 1864. 'This remarkable bridge, built in 1770, is named from its giving access to Pulteney-street and the buildings which were just then commenced in Bathwick parish. From the parallel lines of houses which are built on either side of it, and the uninterrupted level of the streets which it connects, a stranger would pass along Bridge-street unconscious of his crossing the Avon which flows beneath him. It is from below that the character of the bridge - as in our Illustration - is seen to advantage. It may be styled the Rialto of Bath, and has a most Italian and picturesque aspect'. From "Illustrated London News", 1864.
