Proposed union of the British North-American Provinces: Hon. J. [sic] E. Cartier, Attorney-General, 1864. Leading member of the government of Canada. Engraving from a photograph by Messrs. Ellisson and Co., of Quebec. 'We learn by the most recent news from Quebec that the conference of delegates from the provinces of Upper and Lower Canada, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, and Prince Edward Island, who met in that city during a fortnight of October to discuss the best mode of arranging the terms of a definite political union, have arrived at a satisfactory result of their important deliberations. As the debates have been conducted with closed doors, it would be premature to comment upon any of the details of the proposed arrangement; but we observe that its principle seems to have obtained a general assent from public opinion in all those provinces, as well as the approval of her Majesty's Government, so far as we have had any distinct intimation of the views of the Colonial Office'. From "Illustrated London News", 1864.
