'Silver parcel-gilt nef or ship of unusually large dimensions, the body of the ship and above the stand embossed with elaborate ornaments: numerous figures on the deck and on the rigging. Two hallmarks, a shield with two bars and the letters B and D. Height, 2ft. 8½in. Captain Leyland'. A nef was a large medieval sailing ship. From "Illustrated London News", 1862.
