The Schleswig-Holstein Difficulty: torchlight welcome to Prince Frederick by the citizens of Kiel in front of the Railway Hotel, 1864. 'On the last night of the old year the students of the University, assisted by persons of all classes, performed a Fackelzug, or procession by torchlight, perambulating the town and suburbs in procession, accompanied by a band of music, and singing the national Schleswig-Holstein hymn, whilst each person carried a torch of resinous pine in his hand. On arriving before the Prince's quarters at the Railway Hotel they stopped and cheered him vociferously, after which they proceeded to the principal square, where they sang in chorus the old academical song of "Gaudeamus igitur," and then threw their torches into a heap'.
