Laying the Foundation-Stone of the Thames Embankment at Whitehall Stairs, 1864. Mr John Thwaites, chairman of the Metropolitan Board of Works, performed the office. The Thames Embankment is a work of 19th-century civil engineering that reclaimed land next to the River Thames in central London. It consists of the Victoria Embankment and Chelsea Embankment.
