Views of Merton College, Oxford: the Library, 1864. 'Two sides of [the Mob Quadrangle] are occupied by the Library, built by William Rede, Fellow of the college in 1319, and afterwards Bishop of Chichester. He is said to have been his own architect. It is one of the earliest and perhaps now the most genuine, ancient library in the kingdom, and is the prototype of our public libraries. The more ancient window retains some original armorial glass'. From "Illustrated London News", 1864.
