St Andrew. Plate 3. From: Christ and the Apostles, c.1545. This figure of St Andrew makes eye contact with the viewer; this, together with the sharply foreshortened wall to the right, creates a disconcerting effect. Within the niche of the wall is a pitcher, the handle of which is in the shape of a small creature, possibly a demon. As an apostle, accounts claim that Andrew performed miraculous acts including the excisement of demons and extinguishing a fire, surely explaining the pitcher's presence. Behind him is the characteristic X-shaped cross named after him; it represents his martyrdom on such a cross - he considered himself unworthy of being crucified on one like Christ's.
