Gymnastic meeting of the Edinburgh Schools, 1864. 'As an illustration of the growing practice of gymnastic training, which at Edinburgh is now systematically encouraged in the higher and middle-class schools, we present an Engraving of the scene that took place in the Music-hall there, on the 9th April, when the youthful pupils of a dozen different academies were assembled by Captain Roland and Mr. H. Roland to make a public exhibition of their athletic skill. They contended with great spirit for the prizes awarded for various gymnastic performances, drill, fencing, singlestick, sword exercise, bayonet exercise, and the like, to the entertainment of a large company of their parents and friends'.
