'The installation of the new Bishop of Ely took place in Ely Cathedral on Tuesday, the 36th [sic] April. The Right Rev. Edward Harold Browne, D.D., was educated at Cambridge, where he took honours in 1832. He was ordained by a former Bishop of Ely in 1837. He was for some time the Principal and Hebrew Professor of St. David's College, Lampeter. In 1849 he was presented to a living in Cornwall, and appointed one of the Prebendaries of Exeter Cathedral. In 1854 he was elected Norrisian Professor of Divinity in the University of Cambridge. He subsequently held the vicarage of Heavitree, a suburb of Exeter, and obtained a canonry in Exeter Cathedral, He is the author of several works of controversial divinity, amongst which is a reply to Bishop Colenso, published about a twelvemonth ago'.
