Illustrations of the War in Denmark: barrack life of Danish soldiers: Sunday morning, 1864. Engraving '...illustrating the barrack life of the Danish soldiers at Sündsmark, in the Isle of Alsen, while they were kept there to be employed in the defence of Sonderburg and Düppel. The sketches, full of life and humour, were taken by Mr. Simon [sic?] Simonsen, our Danish Artist, about a month since - in fact, on Sunday, April 17, the day before the capture of the Düppel redoubts. One of these scenes shows us the various attitudes of the men, in front of a barrack-hut, during the leisure hours of that Sunday morning ; some of them are under the hands of the barber to have their hair cut or to be shaved; some are sipping a glass of wine at the table; one is washing at a tub; another is drying his shirt and trousers on the roof; one is mending his boots, one reading, and one writing a letter: one smoking his pipe, and one sleeping on the grass. To the left we see a huckster in his cart offering eatables and drinkables for sale'. From "Illustrated London News", 1864.
