City of London Election: the nomination at Guildhall, 1865. '...the hustings was graced by the presence of Royalty: her Majesty the Queen of the Netherlands, accompanied by the Prince of Orange and the Prince and Princess of Saxe-Weimar...[were] privileged spectators of a rather tumultuous scene...The body of the hall, or at least the half of it that was available for the purpose, was pretty equally divided between the friends of the Liberal and the friends of the Conservative candidates. The former, however, were first in the field, and had secured the space nearest the platform. The proceedings were characterised by the utmost good humour, but, at the same time, by a rivalry of vociferation between the opposing sections which rendered movers, seconders, and candidates alike inaudible at a few feet from where they stood. The business was nevertheless performed...The presiding Alderman then put the names of the several candidates to the electors...and declared the show of hands to be in favour - first, of Mr. Crawford; second, of Mr. Goschen; third, of Baron Rothschild; and fourth, of Mr. Alderman W. Lawrence'. From "Illustrated London News", 1865.
