The Right Rev. Dr. Jacobson, the new Bishop of Chester, 1865. 'The new Bishop, whose portrait we have engraved from a photograph taken by Messrs. J. and C. Watkins, of Parliament-street, was chairman of the Oxford committee for promoting the re-election of Mr. Gladstone for the University. He was the Regius Professor of Divinity, Canon of Christ Church, and Rector of Ewelme, Oxfordshire. He has been connected with the University since 1823, when he matriculated at St. Edmund's Hall, but in 1825 became a scholar of Lincoln College. He took his degree of B.A., second class, in 1827. He obtained, in 1829, the Ellerton theological prize for an essay on "The Causes of the Persecution to which the Christians were subjected in the first centuries of Christianity." In the same year he obtained a fellowship of Exeter College. In 1832 he was appointed Vice-Principal of Magdalen Hall. He was Select Preacher in 1833 and 1842, and Public Orator of the University. The professorship, with the canonry and rectory attached thereto, he has held since 1848. Dr. Jacobson was one of the Royal Commissioners appointed last year to consider the terms of clerical subscription'. From "Illustrated London News", 1865.
