The new pier at Aberystwith, [Wales], 1865. 'This pier has been constructed from the designs of Mr. Birch C.E.,...the contractor being Mr. Dawson. It is 800 ft. in length, by 20 ft. wide, except at the entrance and at the head, which are 120 ft. in width, so as to afford space for fancy bazaars and a refreshment saloon. Along the entire length of promenade seats are constructed, capable of accommodating 2000 people, whilst handsome and durable lamps, to the number of sixteen, are erected at short intervals, giving a cheerful and graceful effect to the whole. The pier is supported on cast-iron pillars, braced diagonally, longitudinally, and transversely with wrought- iron rods. The columns at the circular head are strongly braced with wrought iron in every direction. There will be three landing-stages at the head for pleasure-boats and steamers, so as to suit all states of the tide. The entrance to the pier, which is in a line with the principal street of the town (Pier-street), is protected by gates. The pier is one of the greatest improvements that the town has yet known'.
