Ross Appleton notifies Gaynor, 1913. Shows the notification ceremony that took place on September 3, 1913 on the steps of City Hall, New York City, where Mayor William J. Gaynor was nominated for re-election. Banker Ruel Ross Appleton, Sr. (1853-1928) stands next to Gaynor. William Jay Gaynor had served a term as reform mayor of New York. Because the incorruptible Gaynor would not cooperate with the Tammany machine, Tammany refused to nominate him for a second term. So Gaynor was renominated by an independent group, and accepted their nomination.
