It was as though after a century of mechanical propulsion, walking needed a new slogan, a new gimmick to sell it...The summer of great treks, the summer of get-togethers in the great outdoors, the summer of rediscovering each other, in shorts, and shirts'. The mass trespass of Kinder Scout was a protest at Kinder Scout in the Peak District, Derbyshire, which took place on 24 April 1932. The protest sought to highlight that walkers were denied access to areas of open countryside which had been fenced off by wealthy landowners who forbade public access. The imprisonment of some of the trespassers for civil disobedience led to public outrage, which increased support for access to the countryside. The trespass arguably led to the passage of the National Parks legislation in 1949. Some of the trespassers went on to become successful activists and politicians, and some later died fighting against fascism during the Spanish Civil War.
