"Whittington" (sculpture), by C. R. Birch, in the Royal Academy Exhibition, 1869. 'The statue of "Whittington," by Mr. C. R. [sic] Birch, which we have engraved, is a pleasing example of the work of a careful and refined sculptor. The attitude is, of course, intended to indicate that critical moment in the destinies of the young hero, according to the old legend, when, catching the sound of Bow bells, they seemed to chime "Turn again Whittington, turn again Lord Mayor of London".'
