Arms and armour in the Meyrick Collection at South Kensington, 1869. 'No. 1 - several pieces of a German suit of armour, dated 1450: the helmet, the mentonnière or chin-protector, the breastplate, and the back plate; which last...is also shown separately in No. 4. No. 2 - bassinet or helmet, with vizor attached to it, the shoulders clad in chain mail; dated 1320, Italian. Nos. 3, 6, and 7 - portions of the splendid suit of armour belonging to Alphonso II., fifth Duke of Ferrara, end of the 16th century: the gorget, or throat-piece; the breastplate, under which are projecting curved pieces to cover the hips; the back plate, and the pauldrons, or shoulder-pieces; all of steel, beautifully ornamented in repoussé work, gilt and damascened, with masques and mythological figures. No. 5 - carbine, of large bore, such as was called a "dragon," its muzzle being shaped like the gaping mouth of that monster, German, 16th century. No. 8 - suit of puffed and ribbed steel armour, engraved and parcel-gilt, German, dated 1520. No. 9 - suit of bright steel armour worn by an English arquebusier, reign of Charles I. No. 10 - figure of a knight, on foot, equipped in armour of bright steel which is said to have belonged to a Duke of Brunswick in the 16th century'. From "Illustrated London News", 1869.
