Cawdor Bridge, [Scottish Highlands], 1868. 'The environs of the castle are of rare beauty. The approach is graced by many noble oaks and elms...It is...behind the castle and hillwards that the scenery of Cawdor obtains its truly distinctive character. There a wild Highland burn rushes over a rough, rocky bed, forming endless cascades and deep swirling pools...Fourteen miles of footpaths and six miles of carriage-drives have been made through the woods of Cawdor, and bridges have been thrown across the stream at the most picturesque points. The walks are freely open to the public; and many a happy picnic is yearly celebrated in the Cawdor grounds. Large additions to the planting have been made of late years, chiefly of Scotch fir, larch, and oak. In favourable localities these are interspersed with Spanish chestnut, ash, elm and beech, and latterly with many varieties of pine'. From "Illustrated London News", 1868.
