Cook's River Dam, Botany Bay, New South Wales, 1865. 'The beautiful winding river named after the celebrated navigator, Captain Cook, flows into the upper or western extremity of Botany Bay. Across this sheet of water, at a distance of six miles from Sydney, a dam has been constructed, the road over which leads to Illawarra, with its lovely tropical scenery, and the fertile districts of Kiania and Shoalhaven. On the banks of Cook's River the artist meets with many romantic scenes, one of which is shown in our Engraving, from a sketch by Mr. Samuel Elyard. In some places the river passes through low and thickly-wooded groves, whilst in others the banks are bold and rocky. Here and there is a pleasant villa with its orchard, arrayed at times with blossoms of exquisite hues. The river may be traced to its source a few miles inland. The dam...is about eight miles from Botany Heads'. From "Illustrated London News", 1865.
