The closure of the dockyard was '...one of the economical measures of the new Board of Admiralty...That well-known establishment of the British Navy...was commenced by King Henry VIII. in 1513...The victualling offices, which are establishments of great importance, where immense quantities of biscuit and salt beef are prepared for the consumption of our Navy, will not be closed with the dockyard'.
