E. J. Poynter, A.R.A., 1869. In Rome, he '...formed the acquaintance of Mr. Leighton, R.A.,...who encouraged and assisted Mr. Poynter to become an artist, and probably determined him to devote himself to painting...A visit to the Paris Exhibition of 1855 having induced the young student to form a high estimate of the French school of painting, he prevailed on his father to allow him to pursue his studies in Paris...His first employment on his return [to England] was painting the ceiling of Waltham Abbey Church...he made many designs for stained glass; among others, four large historical designs for windows in the Maison Dieu Hall at Dover, and two for windows in the church of St. Bartholomew's Hospital...Mr. Poynter's pictures in subsequent exhibitions of the Royal Academy were specially distinguished by minute attention to archaeological verisimilitude in costumes and accessories...The artist has likewise been represented at the Dudley Gallery in both the oil and water colour exhibitions...Among Mr. Poynter's multifarious labours are...designs for...figures...in the South Kensington Museum; and for the architectural as well as the pictorial decorations of the refreshment-room of the same museum'.
