Front page of the "Illustrated London News", 4 January 1868. "The Illustrated London News", founded by Herbert Ingram and first published in 1842, was the world's first illustrated weekly news magazine. Despite the name, the paper contained a rich collection of world news with features on science and discoveries (from natural science to technological advancements), art and culture, political events, with a special focus on the British royal family. The accompanying illustrations were engravings, sometimes made from photographs. As printing technology advanced, photographs replaced the engravings. "The Illustrated London News" was published weekly for most of its existence and eventually ceased publication in 2003.
