Kennington Turnpike-Gate, lately removed, 1865. 'The abolition of the turnpike gates in the neighbourhood of London having at last been carried into full effect by the removal, a few weeks since, of those on the Surrey side of the Thames, we now present an Engraving which may bear witness in the days of our grandchildren to the existence of that absurd and inconvenient system on the most frequented roads around the metropolis so late as the year 1865. The situation of Kennington Gate, at the point of divergence of the Brixton and Clapham roads, and within a distance of not more than two miles from all the bridges, made it one of the most familiar objects in the experience of the Londoner; and its final disappearance, though not an occasion of regret, must be noticed as a sign of the rapid change of this busy and improving age'.
