Pretender, winner of the Derby, 1869. Ridden by John Osborne. 'This son of Adventurer and old Ferina by Venison was bred by Mr. Sadler, a tradesman in Doncaster...He never trains a horse himself, but always puts them in Messrs. Tattersalls' hands on the Doncaster Thursday...Pretender is more a useful wiry horse than a handsome one, just sixteen hands high, and with a straight neck...His walk, with his hocks so wide apart, is peculiar, and the Newmarket touts professed not to fear him in his gallops...no horse can run gamer than he has done in both his races this year'. From "Illustrated London News", 1869.
