Prince Arthur in Ireland: Belfast, from Newtownbreda, 1869. 'Our View of Belfast is sketched from the neighbouring hill at Newtownbreda. This flourishing city is built on the banks of the river Lagan, at the head of Belfast Lough, or Carrickfergus Bay as it is sometimes called, which is a fine inlet of the sea, twelve miles long and five miles broad. It partakes of the commercial and manufacturing character of Glasgow, Liverpool, and Manchester, and its population has increased nearly five-fold since the beginning of the nineteenth century. Its streets are wide and regular, and somewhat cleaner than those of other seaport towns. The quays, on both sides of the river, and the Queen's Bridge, are among the conspicuous features of the place, with several handsome public buildings'. From "Illustrated London News", 1869.
