Visit of the Prince and Princess of Wales to Ireland: Review in Phoenix Park [in Dublin]: the 12th Lancers galloping past, 1868. '...a fine military spectacle. The Prince and Princess came on the ground about one o'clock; he was on horseback, and she was in an open carriage and four...As they entered, the guns opened with a Royal salute, and "God save the Queen" from many bands was heard above the cries of the people. The Duke of Cambridge, in the uniform of a Field Marshal,...rode close to the Prince of Wales, who wore...the uniform of the 10th Hussars, and Prince Teck, who wore his Austrian regimentals. Lord Strathnairn and his staff, Sir Hope Grant, and all the officers of general and departmental brigade staff who could be spared, were on the ground...the first thing was the march past...the cavalry and horse artillery went past again at a trot and then at a gallop. [After a mock battle,]...the whole force then drew up in front of the saluting-point in a line of contiguous columns and half-batteries; and Lord Strathnairn, placing himself in advance, wheeled round with his staff and gave the orders for an advance in order and for a Royal salute, which were immediately executed with admirable precision and effect'.
