The future King Edward VII visits survivors '...who were injured by the blowing up of the wall at Clerkenwell...His Royal Highness arrived about noon, accompanied by the Duke of Sutherland and several other gentlemen, in two private carriages. They were met by the secretary and treasurer, and some of the surgeons, of the hospital, and conducted to the beds where those patients lay. The Prince expressed his sympathy for them, and they seemed much pleased by his kind attention'. On 13 December 1867 the exercise yard of the Clerkenwell House of Detention in London was the target of a gunpowder explosion instigated by members of the Fenian Society in an attempt to aid the escape of Ricard O'Sullivan Burke, an arms supplier to the Fenians.
