View of Porto Ferrajo, from the Villa San Martino, Elba, 1868. Engraving of a sketch by Mr. P. W. G. Canning, of H.M.S. Caledonia. 'The officers and men of our [ie British] Mediterranean squadron, when cruising last summer, had an opportunity of visiting Elba, which had not been visited by an English man-of-war for some years before, and of seeing Napoleon's residence whilst he was confined to that island...The villa...has a splendid view of Porto Ferrajo, and of the anchorage, upon which Napoleon must often have gazed, as there was an English squadron kept to watch his movements. It is worthy of attention, as showing the restless and suspicious character of this great man, that his dining-room, bath-room, and bed-room were so situated that he could always observe any movement made by our squadron, which was an eyesore to him during his stay in Elba'.
