Visit of the King of Portugal to the English Channel Fleet at Lisbon, 1869. Engraving of a sketch by '...Mr. Henry J. Morgan, R.N., a midshipman on board the Northumberland...His Majesty came afloat in a Royal barge, which is shown in the front of the view, followed by a small steam-yacht or tender. He was greeted by all the British and American ships of war in the harbour with the usual salute of guns; their standards were displayed at the masthead; their yards were manned by the crews, who cheered heartily as the state barge went past them. The flagship, H.M.S. Minotaur, which the King first boarded, is the one represented to the left hand, with her hull half shrouded in the smoke of her guns; still farther to the left is the United States sloop-of-war Ticonderoga, beyond which is the city of Lisbon, rising far up the sides of the hill. The American frigate Franklin, with the stars and stripes at her masthead, is situated in the middle, just opposite the King's barge; to the right hand of which are H.M.S. Penelope and H.M.S. Bellerophon, both firing salutes. These two ships, as well as the Minotaur, were visited by his Majesty before he returned to land'. From "Illustrated London News", 1869.
