German Officers in the Rhineland, 1936. '...in the...demilitarised Rhineland, the tramp of soldiers' boots across the bridges had demonstrated to the World that Germany's VIP [ie Hitler] had an unusually vigorous mind. Afterwards, they found out that Hitler's troops had orders to withdraw at the first sign of opposition. "So what", some said, "after all the Rhineland is Germany", but it wasn't exactly something to cheer about'. On 7 March 1936, in violation of the Treaty of Versailles, German troops marched into the Rhineland and other regions along the Rhine. German territory west of the Rhine had been off-limits to the German military. From "Time To Remember - The Time Of The Three Kings", 1936 ( Reel 1); documentary about events of the year of the abdication crisis.
