'At Cap Gris-Nez [on the French coast] where the Channel was narrowest, the Nazis rolled out their heaviest cannon and pointed them towards the White Cliffs of Dover. Thus began the siege that this gateway to Britain was to endure for four years...For Dover, over and above the air raids, the unique but doubtful honour of shellfire.
