British Soldiers Climbing Aboard Ships at Dunkirk for the Evacuation, 1940. Second World War. 'So began the nine days of [Operation] Dynamo. Under a black shroud from burning oil tanks, Dunkirk and its shell-torn bomb-raked beaches becomes the focus of the free world. Hour after hour, men wade out to the waiting ships, and between the shore and the larger vessels, ferry the little ships, each bringing but a handful, but each handful swelling the ranks of the rescued. If this luck and effort continues, who knows how many might yet escape?' From "Time To Remember - Run Rabbit Run", 1940 ( Reel 4); documentary film about events of early months of 1940.
