Start of 1st ship, Newark Yards, 1917. Shows Mr. John Hunter of the United States Shipping Board, Mr. Henry R. Sutphen, vice president of the Submarine Boat Corporation and others at a ceremony at the Newark Bay Shipyard, Kearny, New Jersey, December 20, 1917. The ceremony marked the first rivet driven into "the first standardized structural steel ship ever built."
