The new actor-knight: Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree as Malvolio, 1909. No. III. in Haviland's Series Of Shakespearean Characters (As Represented By Our Leading Players). 'No honour in the Birthday List was more popular than the knighthood bestowed upon Mr. Tree, our leading actor-manager, who has done so much at His Majesty's Theatre towards increasing the popular knowledge of Shakespeare's works. Sir Herbert was born in London in 1853, the second son of Julius Beerbohm, a London merchant, and was educated both in this country and in Germany. For some time, he was in his father's business: but later, having already acted as an amateur and taken the stage name of Tree, he made his first appearance on the professional stage at the Duke's Theatre, Holborn. This was in June 1876. His first great success was in the part of the Rev. Robert Spalding in "The Private Secretary'" which he played in 1884'. From "Illustrated London News", 1909.
