The new French ministry: Marshal Vaillant (Imperial Household), 1870. 'Marshal Vaillant, ex-Minister of War, took part in the first war against Russia under Napoleon I., and in the war of Italy under Napoleon III.; member of the Academy of Sciences...Marshal Vaillant's duties being thus reduced to those of the administrator of the Civil List, there seems no good reason for his remaining a responsible Minister. A writer, supposed to speak with authority from the Tuileries, says that his position will become that held by the corresponding official in some other countries, where he does not sit in the Council of Ministers'. From "Illustrated London News", 1870.
