Phyllis and Demophoon, 1870. Phyllis, daughter of the King of Thrace, falls in love with Demophoon, son of Theseus, who is staying at her father's court. He departs the court, but promises to return. When he fails to keep his promise, Phyllis kills herself, and is turned by the gods into an almond tree.
