Väinämöinen, Ilmarinen and Lemminkäinen arrive at Pohjola, c1910s. Scene inspired by the "Kalevala" a 19th-century compilation of epic poetry, compiled by Elias Lönnrot from Karelian and Finnish oral folklore and mythology. Joseph Alanen (1885-1920) was a Finnish painter, graphic artist, and illustrator. He was part of the early 20th-century Finnish National Romantic movement, which sought to create a distinct Finnish identity through art, literature, and music.
