Loch Maree, Dingwall and Skye Railway, [Scotland], 1871. 'If the reader will glance at a railway map he will see that the Skye line runs almost due west from Dingwall, the county town of Ross, to the terminus at Strome Ferry...Loch Maree...[is] a noble sheet of water eighteen miles in length. It is separated from the Atlantic by only about a mile of not very rapid water, but a mile of which Sir Humphry Davy - who added to all his great qualities a thorough appreciation of sport - said that it was the best angling stream he had ever fished...The name of Maree is...clearly a modern one, dating only from Christian times. It may mean St. Mary's Lake'. (The Dingwall and Skye Railway was authorised on 5 July 1865 with the aim of providing a route to the Isle of Skye and the Hebrides.)
