Tenants of the Earl of Bandon presenting a gift to his son, Lord Bernard, 1871. Festivities in Ireland, '...upon the occasion of the Right Hon. James Francis Bernard, Viscount Bernard, the eldest son and heir of the Earl of Bandon, arriving at the age of twenty-one...Our Illustration represents...the presentation to his Lordship, at the front door of Castle Bernard, of a handsome gift of silver plate, which his father's tenants and neighbours subscribed to give him, with an address of congratulation. They assembled...to the number of four or five hundred, and...were met by the Earl of Bandon, Lord Bernard, other members of the Bernard family...Mr. H. Harding, of Macroom, read an address from [the tenants] to the Viscount upon the attainment of his majority...The testimonial consisted of four large massive wine-ewers, highly chased, and in frosted and burnished silver of Louis Quatorze style. There were also twelve large silver goblets of the same fashion, and equally-well finished. The whole cost between £100 and £500, and the articles were manufactured expressly for the occasion. The Earl of Bandon entertained all his tenants at dinner that afternoon...They all joined heartily in drinking the young Lord's health'. From "Illustrated London News", 1871.
