Spring in a Narrow Gorge (Quell in einer Felsschluct), 1881. Large, solid boulders and sheer cliffs frame a slight opening at the end of a gorge, where dark silhouetted trees meet the pale sky. The darkness brings into contrast the central bright green birch tree. While the narrow canyon is mostly submerged in shadow, flickers of white light make their way through, dappling the streambed and outlining the tree trunks. Tiny blue and yellow flowers freckle the moss and weeds on either side of the rock pathway in the foreground, adding small touches of colour to this nearly monochromatic view.
