Gionmachi, Kioto, about 1882-1890s. Looking westward along the busy Shijo Street (Shijo-dori) from the western gate of Yasaka Shrine, also known as Gion Shrine. Visible in the foreground is one of the two guardian dog statues that flank the steps of the gate. A watchtower can be seen on the center left area of the image.
