Kago Bearers, about 1868. Focusing on traditional Japanese life, Beato offered a rare visual record of the last years of feudal Japan before modernization began in the Meiji period in 1871. The kango was then a popular mode of transportation. It was replaced by the rickshaw, a two-wheeled cart pulled by a runner, in the early 1870s.
