Plaque with Ceres, 2nd century A.D. Additional Info: Relief fragment decorated with a bust of Ceres (Greek Demeter) in the center. The goddess wears a diadem and a mantle drawn up over her head. On the left is a basket of flowers, symbolizing the abundance of the earth. On the right, a scepter and torch. The edge of a bust of another figure (perhaps her daughter Proserpina) appears at the broken right edge. Vines of grape clusters and leaves run above and below the figures, and the upper and lower edges of the fragment are decorated with a row of circles. The appliqué may once have been attached to a chest.
