Head of a Satyr (Resting Satyr type), A.D. 130-180. Additional Info: Preserved is the head of a young satyr. His long, wavy hair is bound by a fillet and escapes in thick waves around his smooth, round face. The eyes have heavy upper lids. His lips are slightly parted. Only the large, pointy ears reveal his animal nature. The head was carved as a separate piece meant for insertion into a statue, perhaps on a herm. There is some damage visible, most notably the missing tip of the nose. The head is a Roman copy after a Praxitelean original of the leaning satyr type, carved in the fourth century BC.
