The Virgin and Child; Book of Hours, about 1450-1455. Additional Info:Two angels spread their arms to gesture that the Virgin Mary with the infant Jesus is a celestial vision. Although the Virgin appears to be seated on the ground - a sign of humility - the canopy overhead alludes to her role as the Queen of Heaven. This miniature, together with the one on the facing page, introduces the text of the Mass of the Virgin, as indicated by the rubric at the top of the page: Incipit missa de domina n[ost]ra, Here begins the Mass of Our Lady.
